Betty Jo Goodwin, age 91, of Kimberly, Ala. passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Alice Gardner; husband, Lester Goodwin; grandsons, Joshua Mayfield and Stephen King; and siblings, Laylon (Gus) Gardner and Marie Sharp. She is survived by her three daughters, Peggy Mayfield, Jackie (Kennith) Pate, and Robyn (Edward) King; grandchildren: Scott (Stacy) Pate, Kevin Pate, Heath (Kat) Hays, Trent (Gen) Hays,Dustin Pugh, and Sarah (Josh) Mayfield; as well as 11 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, one nephew and several nieces.

She was a woman of great faith and worked continuously for the kingdom of God. She taught Sunday School for many years and made sure that all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew the Lord and had the opportunity to attend church. She was a blessing to so many during her almost 92 years on this earth. She was smart and very strong-willed. Even though she left school after the 11th grade to marry the love of her life and start her family, education was very important to her. After her first two children started school, she herself enrolled at Mortimer Jordan High School, earned her diploma and walked with her graduating class that same year. This was very unheard of at the time. Many of her younger classmates told her what an inspiration she was to them and how they were proud to be graduating with her. She began her first career as a bookkeeper with many successful years. In her second career, she was the city clerk/court clerk at the Town of Kimberly for several years. After she retired, she could not sit still for long so she moved on to political aspirations. She ran for and was elected councilwomen at the Town of Kimberly for two terms. One of her favorite hobbies was gardening, as she loved for her yard to look beautiful. She also loved to paint and ended up taking classes for senior citizens at Wallace State. She and her husband were both very crafty and enjoyed making things together. They were very popular vendors at Homestead Hollow, Tannehill and Primetime.

A visitation will be held in the chapel of Messmer Goodwin Funeral Home on Saturday, February 8. The family will receive guests in the chapel from 12:00 p.m. until the beginning of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Immediately following the funeral service, everyone will depart from the funeral home promptly and begin making their way to Morris Cemetery, where we will all reconvene at the graveside for a brief committal service just before interment.
