Carvwin Self, known by all as Bud, was born the 5th of 7 children to Milton and Gertrude Self on May
15, 1934 in Majestic, Alabama, and went home to be with the Lord on August 26, 2023.
Bud graduated from Minor High School and went on to receive an Electrical Engineering Degree from
Auburn University in 1957. He then served 5 years in the Navy, attaining the rank LTJG. While in the
Navy, Bud flew reconnaissance missions off an aircraft carrier during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Bud enjoyed a long career as an engineer, working on the Gemini rocket program, and retired in 1994
after serving many years with Prestolite Wire.
After retirement and extensive travel, Bud and Juanell settled in Fayetteville, Tennessee, where they
became members of the First Baptist Church. Over the years, Bud taught Sunday School at several
churches. In addition to being the past President of the senior adult ministry, known as the YY's, at the
First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Bud also participated in the business-community service
development program Leadership Lincoln.
Bud enjoyed studying the Bible, travel, playing his ukulele, gardening, woodworking, restoring antiques,
Braves baseball, anything Auburn, and especially family.
Bud is survived by his wife of 66 years, Juanell McBrayer Self, 3 children, Susan Self Roberts, Mike Self
(Resa), and Greg Self (Hortensia), 7 grandchildren, Sarah Trimm (Hugh), Jamey Roberts III (Whitney),
Rachel Levi (Avi), Joseph Roberts (Michelle), Maria Self, Gregory Self, Daniel Self, and 8 great-
grandchildren, Quinn and Gareth Roberts; Shaylee and Jackson Roberts; Shon, Milan, Jesse and Kai Levi.
He is also survived by brother, C.D. Self (Jean), and sister, Katherine Self Little, sister-in-law, Ginger Teal
Self, brother-in-law, Howard McBrayer (Tracie), sister-in-law, Margie McBrayer, and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton O. and Gertrude Self, brothers, Elzie, Milfred, R.C., and
Don Wayne Self.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Tina and Kristin at Lincoln Medical Home Health and
Hospice, as well as Dr. Benjamin Miriovsky, and the wonderful staff at Clearview Cancer Institute in
Huntsville, Alabama.
Tributes can be made to the Fayetteville First Baptist Church Mission Fund, or to Lincoln Medical
Hospice in Fayetteville, Tennessee.

There will be a visitation for Mr. Self on Wednesday Aug. 30, 2023 from 12:00 PM- 2:00 PM at Messmer Goodwin Funeral Home with funeral services starting at 2:00 PM. Burial to follow at Bethel Cemetery.
