Obituary

James Edward "PawPaw" Hogeland, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, in Hayden, Alabama. James was a loving husband, father, PawPaw, and devout Christian who loved his family and friends. He met his wife, Shirley, in 1957, in Cape May, New Jersey, and they were happily married for 62 years. James joined the United States Coast Guard in 1956, and proudly served his country for ten years. He was stationed in Mobile, Alabama during his service time, and helped with search and rescue during Hurricane Betsy. During his free time, James enjoyed working in the yard, fixing things around the house, and woodworking. PawPaw's biggest accomplishment and greatest pride in his life was his family. He loved spending time with his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids at the park, watching ballgames, and anywhere else he had the chance. He loved to joke around, and always strived to make those around him laugh. PawPaw lived a full and happy life, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

James was preceded by his father, Henry Clay Hogeland; mother, Dorothy McAnnally Hogeland; step-mother, Willine Franklin Hogeland; and brother, Richard Curtis Hogeland.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirley Jean Taylor Hogeland; children, James C. Hogeland (Oueda), Penney H. Kennedy (Jude), and Tracey L. Morgan (Tony); grandchildren: Clay Hogeland (Rachel), Bryce Hogeland (Kendall), Bree Claire Phelps (Jacob), Micayla Combellick (Dylan), Carson Rickels and Samuel Kennedy; great-grandchildren: Maizee Hogeland, Heidi Hogeland, Leo Phelps, and Luke Hogeland; and his sister, Shelia Pickett.
