Jerry Cox, loving and devoted husband to Annette Writesman Cox passed away on April 27th, 2023 at the age of 82 in Birmingham, AL surrounded by his family.  His struggles with the pain and limitations from health issues over the last several years are forever past, as he is now at peace.

Proud grandfather of Jessica (James) Swanner, Melissa Thomas, Dillon Cox, Carson Woods, Samantha Berbrier, Jack Berbrier, Cameron (Matt) Berryman and Lauren (Joseph) Chandler.
Great grandfather of Tristan Swanner, Sabastian Swanner, Aria Thomas and Lily Chandler.
Jerry was born on November 12th, 1940 in Hayden, AL.  He was born into a farming family where the value of hard work and perseverance was learned at an early age, where excuses were not tolerated, and accomplishments were seldom celebrated.  One of the millions of the "Greatest Generation" our country has ever known and will ever know, he lived a life of hard work and dedication as a father, a provider for his family and unsung citizen.  For many years, he worked two jobs in the demanding structural steel industry as a welder and fitter, helping build the infrastructure of our great country.
He graduated from Hayden High School in 1959 and in 1963 he married the love of his life, Annette, to whom he would stay married for 60 years until his passing.  Having grown up in a farming family, he maintained a love for it all his life and enjoyed planting a garden each year to grow fresh fruits and vegetables, riding around on his beloved John Deere tractor and keeping up the family property.  Even in his last years, while disabled by several health issues, he enjoyed being outside, always with a faithful canine companion running alongside the lawnmower as he cut the grass or in the truck seat next to him as he drove along country roads.   He appreciated a good cup of coffee in the morning and catching up with friends when he could get out, and he enjoyed a good old western movie and watching the Crimson Tide or Braves baseball.
He was a loving husband and father, caring son and brother, and good friend to many.  He had a sentimental soul and tender heart but struggled to show affection outwardly; yet somehow, he never seized to convey his love and affection in his own way to those he cared for and loved.   He was not famous, can't be found in any history book but he like millions of others of his era, did the right things; he worked hard, helped make a life for himself, his wife and children, took care of his elderly sister and mother, was honest and trustworthy and expected not much in return other than a little love and respect.
He will be missed greatly, appreciated for his dedication to family and honored by those who hold memories of him dear.

The family will receive friends at Messmer Goodwin Funeral Home Sunday, April 30 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Services for Mr. Cox will be at St. Henry's Catholic Church Monday, May 1 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the adjoining cemetery.
