Tarrence Lamar Layne, Sr. passed away on April 23, 2026, at the age of 92.

Lamar was the last surviving member of a family of seven. He was preceded in death by his parents, William F. Layne, Sr. and Myrtle May Jolly Layne; brothers, Harold, Charlie (Joyce), Aaron, and Fred Jr.; sisters, Mary Creel (Wallace) and Dot Hill (Julius); as well as brothers-in-law, Mike Mayfield and Sam Mayfield.

Lamar was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but grew up in Warrior, Alabama. He served in the US Army after high school. He later moved his family to Cleveland, Ohio, where he worked in the steel mills until his retirement at age 62. He also studied accounting and ran a tax preparation business throughout most of those years. He taught us the art of going to work every day without complaining. He returned to Warrior after retiring.

He loved sports and played basketball, baseball, and football in high school and golf as an adult. He was a fan of the Crimson Tide, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He taught all of us who grew up around him how to love, understand, and respect the games and the players. He also showed us how to spot nonsense. He enjoyed cooking and made delicious ice cream. He read every Louis Lamour and Larry McMurtry book more than once and he loved to watch Westerns. He had every Willie Nelson album and saw him live many times.

Lamar is survived by former wife, Leila Mayfield Layne; son, Terry Jr. (Diana Kimbrough); and daughters, Deborah (John Elliott) and Dawn Augustine; as well as one grandson, Nicholas Layne Elliott (wife Shella and daughter Aslynn). He was the beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, including Christie Mayfield, Melonie Kidd, Steven Mayfield (wife Mayu and daughters Emmalee and Rosalee), and Ashley Glover (David).
