Obituary

Lester Stanley Walker, age 92, of Hayden, AL passed away peacefully at home on August 12, 2022. Lester (Lec) was born on June 8, 1930, in Guthrie, OK to Offie James Walker, Sr. and Ellen Mitchell Walker. His family moved to Birmingham, AL when he was young, and he was raised there along with three brothers and one sister. In 1948, Lester enlisted in the Air Force and served on various bases in the United States and England. Eventually, he served in Korea through the end of the conflict, and then entered private life. In Lester's career, he worked for 35 years at Butler Manufacturing Company and was a master welder and moved into various roles and supervisory positions until his retirement in 1989.

On December 11, 1954, Lester married Anna Estelle Bradford. They lived in Birmingham, AL until 1967, and then moved to an area near Corner, AL, where both lived the rest of their lives. Lec and Estelle were married for 45 years, until her passing in the year 2000. Both were committed Christians and "faith and family" were the two most important things in their lives. Lester was an ordained Baptist deacon and served for years at Packer Memorial Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, and then Mount Zion Baptist Church near Corner, AL.

Lester was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Estelle; parents, Offie James Walker, Sr. and Ellen Mitchell Walker; and siblings, Offie James Walker, Jr., Arnie Gerald Walker, Effie M. Laird, Oran Kenneth Walker, Jack Walker, and Lloyd Walker. He is survived by his daughter, Sue Schmidt; son, Lester Stanley Walker, Jr. (Debbie); grandchildren, April Elisabeth Walker, Heather Anne Clark (Chris), Joshua Scott Walker, Howell Darnell Gray; as well as five great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and several caring nieces and nephews.

Lester was a loving and faithful husband, father and grandfather. One of his great pleasures in retirement was to follow and participate in the sporting events and school activities of his grandchildren, whom he adored.
