Mary Sue Chappell Hayes, age 96, of Warrior, AL, entered into Heaven on October 13, 2021. Mary was born on April 25, 1925 in New Bethel, Alabama, to William Perry and Maudie Mae Sharit Chappell. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, Aulton, Belton, and Clifton Chappell; granddaughter, Robin Crane Welshans; great-grandchildren, twins Daniel and Misty Swann, and David Bentley; and son-in-law, Howard Crane. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Laverne Crane; granddaughters, Michelle Crane (Todd), and Julie Clevenger (Keith); four great-grandchildren, Adam Clevenger (Jennifer), Alyssa Clevenger, Randy Bentley, and Chase Crane (Kallie); four great-great-grandchildren, Amber, Jackie and Gage Clevenger, and Madeline Crane; sister, Clara Dunn; honorary grandddaughters, Tonya Bentley, Ashley Bentley Hammett, Anna Garcia, and Abby Melvin; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. She was an independent and self-made woman who worked hard and achieved much throughout her life. She always lived her best life and she lived her life her way. After retiring from a long and successful career, she volunteered at Carraway Hospital for many years. She also pursued her remarkable talent of painting and many of her award-winning paintings were displayed at Carraway Hospital and The Birmingham Library. She enjoyed traveling and she also enjoyed the outdoors. Throughout the warm months and until she was almost 95 years old, she could be found working in her yard, mowing her own lawn, and taking care of her flowers and shrubs. She was a loving and devoted "Mama Hayes" to her granddaughters, as well as a devoted and loving "GiGi" to her great and great-great-grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered as an elegant and fine lady, generous, kind-hearted, and compassionate. She never met a stranger, she was always a good neighbor, and she loved everyone unconditionally. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff of Hope Hospice of Gardendale for providing excellent care and support to her and to the family. A memorial service will be held at a later date for family and friends.
