Nelle
Murphy
Oct 4, 1923 — Jun 8, 2024
Nelle Louise Powell Murphy passed away peacefully on June 8, 2024, in
Long Beach, MS. She was born October 4, 1923, in Trafford, AL. Her
100 years on this earth were spent in service of her Savior, her family
and her community. With her father a Methodist minister, Nelle's
contributions to the church began early in her life. As a very young girl,
she accompanied the singing in services on a pump organ. However, her
younger sisters had to actually pump it since Nelle was too short to
reach. Her rich life of service continued after she married and moved.
She taught Sunday School, chaired committees, raised her family, sang
in the choir, volunteered at the local hospital and worked as a secretary
at both the church, South Roebuck Baptist, and school, South East Lake
Middle, in her community. After retirement, she returned to her family's
home community and once again accompanied the singing at the family
church, Bethel United Methodist. The beauty and love that her
wonderful smile provided for over 100 years simply cannot be conveyed
in writing. She will be deeply missed by anyone whose life she touched
and blessed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph W. and Edna Rogers
Powell; her husband, George Trenton Murphy, Sr; her son, George
Trenton Murphy, Jr; her daughter, Rose Lynn Murphy Holland; her
granddaughter, Jessica Ruth Kupfer and her son-in-law, Richard S.
Waller. She is survived by her daughters Edna Waller and Jane
McCurdy (John), seven grandchildren and spouses, twelve great-
grandchildren and spouses and seven great-great-grandchildren as well
as many nephews and nieces.
The services will be held at Bethel Community Church, 9417 Thermal
Rd, Warrior, AL 35180, on Saturday June 15, 2024. Family visitation
10:00-10:30 a.m., friends 10:30-11:00 a.m. and funeral 11:00 a.m.
