Obituary

Velma L. Mikell, age 89, of Oneonta, Alabama, passed peacefully away, Sunday, May 21, 2023. Mrs. Mikell was preceded in death by her parents, Carter and Clara Mae Winnett; husband, Billy Joe Mikell; sister, Bernice Shuggart. She is survived by her children, Larry (Teresa) Mikell, Billy (Renee') Mikell, and Jerome (Debra) Mikell; brothers, Amos, Morris, and Horace Winnett; sisters Sheila Gregory, and sister-in-law, Doris Shipp; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of beloved family.

Velma was a graduate of Warrior High School in Warrior, Alabama, where she grew up and spent her childhood years. She was married to Billy Mikell of Corner, Alabama, until his death in1998. She worked tirelessly as a nursing assistant in a long career spanning 45 years at Estes Civic Center Nursing until her retirement at the age of 81. Velma spent much of her career not only caring for patients and assisting the nursing staff, but training, mentoring, and facilitating others.

She enjoyed crocheting, and talking with her family and friends, traveling, and especially loved camping in the Smokey Mountains.

The family will receive friends at Messmer Goodwin Funeral Home Thursday, May 25 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. A funeral service will follow immediately after visitation. A private Interment will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery (2427 Corner Rd., Warrior, AL).
